Some people would happily fork out thousands of dollars on clinical procedures and splash out on expensive creams in order to achieve a youthful complexion. But some might prefer a reliable home remedy for anti aging, especially if they’re unsure as to which products suit their skin and whether expensive solutions actually work. These five solutions that are known to help you defy age.

  1. Avoid Stress by Doing Relaxing Activities
  2. Exercise Regularly
  3. Eat Well & Stay Hydrated
  4. Get a Massage
  5. Try Cryotherapy

1. Avoid Stress by Doing Relaxing Activities

Stress is a familiar and often unwelcome addition to our lives. When you’re in a stressful situation, your body releases negative hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, that trigger your fight or flight response and give your body a sudden burst of energy and strength.

It’s normal to experience stress every now and again, but when you start to wear it like a second skin, it’s time to take steps to reduce your levels of stress and the pressure placed upon your body. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure and increase the likelihood of cardiovascular conditions as well as causing your skin to break out and give you more headaches.

Avoid stress by engaging in relaxing activities such as yoga. Last year, a Harvard and Columbia study found that yoga eases the brain by increasing serotonin levels, which are the body’s natural stress-relieving hormones.

Stress hormones also induce anxiety. While this is a helpful response if you were living out in the wild and your life is constantly under threat, more often that not, these hormones have a negative effect on your skin and the anxiety can prevent you from sleeping, which causes those dreaded dark circles and wrinkles around the eyes.

Yoga is a mind-body practice that encourages you to focus on your breathing, engage in meditation and getting your body into a series of physical poses. The combination of these activities allows you to slow down and become more aware of your surroundings. The deep, slow breathing exercises also have a calming effect on the mind and allow you to release your stress and anxieties in a more productive and natural way than medication or working in a frenzied state.

2. Exercise Regularly

Besides easing stress, exercise is known to help you improve your physical condition, lose weight and boost your immune system, but did you know that it can also slow down cell aging?

A Canadian study found that frequent exercisers over the age of 40 had skin that resembled the supple, elastic nature of people in their 20s and 30s. Researchers attributed this to exercise creating bodily substances that help slow down the aging of skin.

Exercise was also found to play a role in decreasing the body’s overall aging too. As well as reducing stress and helping you sleep more soundly, a 2013 UCSF study found exercise might play a role in turning off the aging process in your chromosomes. Regular exercise can greatly improve your odds of living a longer life.

3. Eat Well & Stay Hydrated

We all know how important diet is in keeping our bodies fit and healthy. Eating well and staying hydrated have many benefits for your skin in particular. Balanced diets that are packed with key nutrients, such as antioxidants and omega-3s and plenty of water, are vital in keeping your complexion clear and your body healthy.

One University of Missouri-Columbia study showed that water increased blood flow to the skin, meaning that more nutrients reached the area to help it recover and it was left flushed and glowing.

Rachel Nazarian, a board-certified dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, told Women’s Health Mag that inadequate water causes skin to appear duller and wrinkles and pores more prominent. That’s why it is important that you maintain a balanced diet and keep your body hydrated if you want to delay the effects of age.

4. Get a Massage

Massage therapy provides the body with many benefits, including the ability to help it defy age. Bi-weekly Swedish massages have been shown to reduce cortisol levels which leave the body less stressed, fixes posture, improves sleep quality and stimulate blood circulation to the skin. All of which leaves your complexion healthy and glowing. A combination of these benefits helps you to look and feel younger.

Whether you get regular sessions by a professional therapist or perform simple face massages by yourself at home to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, a massage can be an effective anti-aging treatment to try.

5. Try Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a therapy that involves exposing the body to subzero temperatures by using cryogenically cooled air. This provides a plethora of benefits from enhancing the body’s recovery process to boosting fitness. Another interesting benefit of cryotherapy is its ability to rejuvenate the skin and fight the signs of aging.

As we age, our energy levels drop and our body finds it harder to filter out the toxins and collagen production dips. This leaves our skin saggier, duller and more wrinkled than when we were younger. Whole-body cryotherapy reverses these effects by exposing the body to sudden, extreme-cold temperatures which triggers the body into action on a cellular level.

Cryotherapy is a very popular treatment and is particularly well received by Hollywood celebrities who rely on radiating, youthful beauty and professional athletes who rely on enhanced sports performance to secure long and successful careers.
