How Does Cryotherapy Work for Weight Loss?

Cryotherapy rapidly increases your metabolic rate which, when combined with an all-round healthy lifestyle of regular exercise and a balanced diet, is the best way to burn fat a lot faster than you normally would.

After your treatment, your brain signals to the rest of your body to pump blood to your body’s core to increase your body heat and therefore your metabolic rate.

Enriched blood rushes back out and through your body, boosting immunity, natural pain relief and cell renewal. After you’ve been exposed to the subzero temperatures during your treatment, your body is obviously going to need to use a considerable amount of energy to heat back up again.

Your body is essentially tricked into thinking that it’s going to freeze. Like when you’re too cold in winter, you’ll start to shiver and your internal processes will work harder in order to help bolster body temperature. As a result of this, fat will start to burn much more quickly as your body needs more energy and nutrients in order to continue functioning in the extreme cold conditions.

For up to eight hours after your session, you’ll burn about 2000-3000 kilojoules (kJ), which is around 500-800 calories. That’s the same amount of calories burned as if you’d gone out on a 45-minute run. This is alongside your existing calorie burning as part of your healthy diet and exercise.

You’ll achieve maximum results with repeated sessions, along with improved circulation and muscle tone.

How Often Should I Have a Cryotherapy Session to Lose Weight?

In order to achieve the best possible results from your cryotherapy treatments, in addition to your healthy eating and exercise plan, we recommend that you book in for a minimum of 10 sessions within a two- to three-week period. It’s safe to have a cryotherapy treatment every day too, if you prefer.

The reason why we suggest that you should book in for this number of treatments is because after your first few sessions, your increased metabolic rate tends to last longer between treatments and therefore the benefits are cumulative.

Is There Any Proof of Successful Weight-Loss?

A study published by The Journal of Clinical Investigation found that people who spent two hours a day for six weeks in a 17℃ room burned more energy than those who were in a 27℃ room. Similarly, another study found that people who slept with the temperature set at 19℃ increased their levels of calorie burning by up to 42 percent and a further 10 percent boost in their metabolic rate.

If a temperature change of just 10℃ can make that much of a difference, just think what results you will start to see when exposed to the subzero temperatures.

However, this study suggests that simply being exposed to the cold temperatures during cryotherapy is enough for you to see weight loss results – that’s not the case unfortunately.

What Else Do I Need to do Alongside Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy should be used as a supplement to complement a healthy diet and regular exercise. Unless you’re exercising or eating well as well as having regular sessions, you’re not going to see the groundbreaking results that can be achieved.

During the session, the cold temperatures release endorphins, which can leave your body feeling revitalised and fresh. These endorphins can help you bump up the intensity at the gym and speed up recovery from a sore body. The process should be repeated regularly, then you’ll see those results developing at a much quicker rate.

As well as weight loss, cryotherapy aids recovery. This allows you to train harder and more frequently. In a study published by the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, nine athletes were put to the test and performed three all out cycling bouts and were provided with different methods of recovery between each bout. These included active recovery, rest and cryotherapy.

After the test, all nine participants reported that the bout after cryotherapy was easier than the other two and their lower extremities felt much better too. Their lower extremities felt better after cryotherapy than the other recovery methods will allow athletes to train harder.
